Delightful screwball comedy-romance which is quick to acknowledge its love for the classics of the studio age. There's even a skit on the Mouth of Truth scene in Roman Holiday (1953). Of course, such films live or die on the charm of their stars. And it lucks out with the winsome-but-sexy Marisa Tomei and a puppyish Robert Downey Jr.
She's the ditzy/impulsive bride-to-be on the run and he's the disorientated male caught in the vortex of her craziness. Hollywood has been making this film since the coming of sound, but this is among the best in colour. When just a precocious child, she learns from an Ouija board that her future husband will be called... Damon Bradley.
But she's engaged to a foot doctor named Dwayne. For complex reasons she flies to Italy in pursuit of her destiny, only to meet cute with a flummoxed shoe salesman. So as well as the stars- and Marisa's adorable overbite- there's the glorious photography of the tourist hotspots of Venice, Rome, sunny Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast..
And if that's not already too much, it's shot by Sven Nykvist! Plus there are the sentimental Italian ballads... And Ms. Tomei wears some stunning gowns for a girl with one suitcase. This is sure to appeal to anybody who loves screwball classics like It Happened One Night (1934); it's one of those films like the ones they don't make anymore,
