Known largely because of his versatile vocal talents Jeremy Irons’ rich voice has aided him in portraying both the well-to-do romantic roles typically personified by British men of his generation as well as eliciting shivers when he plays less agreeable and outright evil characters.

Beginning his career as a busker Irons began his acting career on stage in the late 1960’s and made his big break into the business as John the Baptist in a stage performance of the musical Godspell alongside musician David Essex. Though considerably underutilized in his on-screen performances Irons’ singing voice remains one of the most impressive and easily recognizable of his generation. One of his most famous performances which utilized both his speaking and singing voices was his role as the sadistic uncle in the pseudo-Shakespearean Disney animation The Lion King (1994).

A great deal of press about Irons has, not just in recent years but throughout his career, related to his appearance, known for his tall, slender figure and wolfish grin Irons was often called the “thinking woman’s pin-up”, and despite his age many women profess that he still holds much of the charm he had in his youth. Many audiences, both critical and admiring, have noted the duality that is often present in his performances; often understated yet explosive, imposing yet ordinary, overtly flamboyant but nonetheless discreet Irons’ characters exude presence without being overwhelming. This particular acting style can not only be seen in the roles he chooses - such as the rich man who despises his wealth or the serious man with a devilishly black humour- but also in his personal life. Irons thinks of himself as both ordinary and an outsider, prides himself on his performances but then becomes abashed about his awards; his own life reflecting the dichotomy inherent in many of the characters he plays. This duality could not be more apparent than in his double performances as twin gynaecologists in Dead Ringers.

He has gained critical recognition for several of his on-screen performances, including a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for 1981’s Brideshead Revisited (1981), along with an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Claus von Bülow in Reversal of Fortune (1990). Such portrayals were applauded largely for Irons’ on-screen presence; the way in which he manages to balance the aforementioned duality of many of his characters – the trait which arguably synched his Academy Award – is both balanced and mesmerising.
