Synopsis:
After sweeping through France and Belgium in the summer of 1944, the allies were poised to enter the Netherlands. Field Marshall Montgomery favoured a single thrust north over the Rhine to attack the Ruhr with the aim of winning the war by the end of 1944. To achieve this objective the allies launched "Operation Market Garden" on 17 September 1944. Paratroopers were dropped behind enemy lines led by the First British Airborne Division at Arnhem. The objective being to secure a crossing of the Lower Rhine and link up with ground troops who would follow through. From the start however the operation ran into difficulties.
The paratroopers ran into stiff German resistance and quickly became trapped in a pocket just north of the river. The Paratroopers suffered heavy casualties and were withdrawn after 9 days of heavy fighting. Theirs is the Glory was produced one year after the Battle of Arnhem and is a unique account in that it was filmed entirely without the use of studio sets or actors. The film cleverly weaves original footage with re-enactments shot on location in Arnhem featuring the men from the Airborne Regiment who actually fought in the battle. This film is a tribute to every man who fought at Arnhem and an everlasting memorial to those who gave their lives.
