Serpico

Very dated

(Edit) 23/07/2018

Far too long with repetitive scenarios. I'm an ardent Pacino fan and glad to say he has now materialised into a more versatile and accomplished actor rather than the actor displayed in this movie. Lost interest and abandoned three quarters of the way through.

Harmonium

Not the best

(Edit) 21/07/2018

Nicely crafted and good acting fails to redeem this bleak and humourless drama. Also far too long. Nice to see some Japanese countryside towards the end. Apart from that, bit of a no no.

The Happy Prince

Very well done Mr Everett

(Edit) 14/07/2018

Unless you are familiar with the literary giant that was Oscar Wilde - his aestheticism, his wit and the wonderful literature he gave to society - his genius may not be appreciated from this portrayal of the sad and seedy life he led after being released from prison and which had very little of the flamboyance of his earlier life. Unless you are in the know, it may also be difficult to understand who the acquaintances from England are that come back into contact with him during the dark days of his exile and his not too distant demise. The film was written, directed and starred in by Rupert Everett. It's obviously a labour of love for Mr Everett and has resulted in a magnificent film which I thoroughly enjoyed. He has done himself proud. I loved the way he entwined Wilde's children's story of The Happy Prince with what was happening on screen towards the end. This reduced me to tears, as did the story when I originally read it years ago. Emily Watson also gave an outstanding performance as Wilde's wife, Constance. Attention to detail with the period clothing is also to be applauded as are the very lovely locations in France and Italy. .

The Greatest Showman

Viewed against my better judgement.

(Edit) 30/06/2018

Disappointed with this sacherine offering of a musical. The kinetic editing was an impediment to the flow of the movie, thus it mostly presented as a long drawn out trailer.

A Monster Calls

A waste of time

(Edit) 30/06/2018

People appear to either love or hate this movie - afraid I'm in the latter category. The tree was cleverly animated but the movie failed to engage my attention. Sigourney Weaver looked partiicularly uncomfortable in her role as the boy's grandma. Gave up half way through.

Shaun the Sheep Movie

Totally engrossing

(Edit) 01/07/2018

Usual very high standard from Aardman Productions. Yes, we've seen these funny scenarios before but carried out with such originality and panache by Shaun and company, you can't help but laugh out loud and empathise with the soulful moments. There are so many harsh and unsettling movies around these days, it's a change to watch something so very pleasant. Not a great animation fan but Shaun the Sheep and Toy Story movies are in a class of their own.

Loving

Must try harder!

(Edit) 27/06/2018

Movie apparently based on a true story. I couldn't engage with any of the characters (if characters they be) and found the incessant doe-eyed expression on the face of the female lead very irritating. Male lead was glum and both were humourless. Bordering on the banal, I wouldnt recommend this to anybody. One star for the song accompanying the credits

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

Not for the faint hearted

(Edit) 27/06/2018

Not seen the likes of this before. Apart from it definitely not being a comedy, unsure what genre it falls into. It is indeed a very strange movie and becomes extremely uncomfortable viewing as the film progresses. Excellent acting drew me in and made a rather bizarre story almost believable. It's also accompanied by a weird and alarming soundtrack. The guy who plays the young 'oddball' lead is a star in the making, well matching the acting skills of Colin Farrell.

In Bruges

Well done MMcD

(Edit) 20/06/2018

Not my usual sort of watch but did so as directed by Martin McDonagh (having so admired his Three Billboards etc). It didn't disappoint - superb acting and very funny in parts plus the lovely backdrop of Bruges. To my mind, Martin McDonagh is one of the best writers/directors of the 21st century. Can't wait for his next offering.

Jawbone

Well done

(Edit) 19/06/2018

Excellent performance from Johnny Harris in the lead role and magnificent camera work contrive to make this movie essential viewing. Ray Winstone playing well, Ray Winstone, is as good as ever. Movie holds the attention throughout. (Also nice song from Paul Weller as the credits roll).

The Salesman

A film with a difference

(Edit) 19/06/2018

An unusual and interesting storyline, tackling a disquieting theme. Plods along in parts but this only adds to its charm. Beautifully acted throughout by the whole cast.

Graduation

Easily Forgotten!

(Edit) 19/06/2018

I've come to write a review of this film a couple of weeks after watching it. The film obviously didn't make much of an impact as I couldn't remember any of the characters. I had to read the synopsis to remind myself of what the film was about but still had difficulty remembering it!

Fargo

Did try to like it!

(Edit) 10/04/2018

I saw this movie when it first came out in 1996 and didn't like it. Having seen Frances McDormand's wonderful performance in the magnificent Three Billboards, I thought that my now being more mature (?) and being more appreciative of black humour, also bearing in mind the accolades Fargo got at the time, that my original opinion of the movie would be changed. It wasn't! Shame.

My Feral Heart

Quiet viewing

(Edit) 10/04/2018

Quite a sweet little film but would have thought more appropriate as a television presentation. Bit of an unacceptable scenario, especially the ending. That having been said - nicely acted by the gentleman with Down's Syndrome in the lead role.

Julieta

Quite watchable.

(Edit) 23/03/2018

A strange little film about the estrangement of a mother and daughter. The viewer is presented with past and present scenarios and deals with demons being laid to rest. Quite engaging and with good acting throughout from all the cast.
