Synopsis:
Zhao Tao, Jia's muse, is one of these troupers. For Tao and the larger ensemble of pageant performers at Beijing's real-life World Park (a sprawling hyper-pastiche of global landmarks - "famous sites from five continents"), love is respite from work, work is respite from love, and the line that extends from the past to the future loses all definition beyond the present.

ENTERTAINING AND THOUGHT PROVOKING SPECTACLE - The World review by GF

Spoiler Alert
17/06/2015

The Fourth film from Chinese Director Zhang Ke Jia, charts the lives of a group of young performers and security guards living and working in a giant theme park in Bejing. The theme park is made of of tacky replicas of The Eifffel Tower, Big Ben and Ulan Bator.

Spending their days dressed in silly costumes and the boys as security guards, this charts the changes the characters undergo in modern China that has itself transformed istself from Communism to state capitalism.

A serious and entertaining move from one of China's finest and most internationally known auters.

Great film - The World review by ST

Great film...full of irony and metaphor. Very clever, by turns consciously ridiculous and poignant and ultimately very moving. I had the impression of a director working under the constraint of a censor to get a subtle but telling message across. Loved it....

Modern Chinese cinema at its best. - The World review by TE

"The World" amusement park is a wonderful setting for this very humane narrative, and Zhang Ke Jia exploits the possibilities with confident grace.

The film manages a delicate balance between characterisation and visual beauty, and the acting is spot on throughout. This is the work of a master of his craft.
