Synopsis:
John Betjeman was born in Highgate in 1906. A prolific poet, broadcaster and architectural campaigner, he was knighted in 1969 and made Poet Laureate in 1972. He died in May 1984 and is buried in St Endoc's Church near his beloved home in Trebetherick. 'Thank God It's Sunday' (1972) features two films made by Sir John Betjeman in the 1970s showing how Londoners spend their Sundays. The first film looks at those who escape to the seaside on their day of rest, while the second follows the city folk who stay in the capital.
This disc also includes the much loved 'Summoned By Bells' (1976) in which John Betjeman takes an unashamedly nostalgic journey through his childhood where sunny memories of family holidays in Cornwall contrast with the 'shivering doom' of Marlborough College and his ultimately frustrating studies at Oxford. Join the nation's best-loved poet as he explores the world which first inspired him to translate his passions into verse.
