Synopsis:
In this emotional roller coaster ride, Robert Harmon (John Cassavetes) is a street-wise, sometimes obnoxious writer currently working on a book about the seamier side of buying/selling love, and Sarah Lawson (Gena Rowlands) is an emotive wife and mother struggling through a divorce and custody battle. When Sarah lands on Robert's doorstep with her suitcases, it seems at first that she has returned to her husband. Robert has several women staying at his place (research sources!), but when his real ex-wife arrives with their young son, he sends the women packing. Sarah, it turns out, is Robert's sister.
As the two work out their own live's hurdles - Robert, the unaccustomed father with his 8-year-old son, and Sarah, trying to cope with her custody battle and its results - their way of handling adversity and personal burdens becomes the real subtext of the film.

Cassavetes and Rowlands — love at the edge of chaos - Love Streams review by griggs

Spoiler Alert
01/05/2025

I consider myself a fan of John Cassavetes, but Love Streams blew me away. There’s something utterly beautiful and honest at its core—the idea that it’s not enough to want to love someone; you have to be ready to be loved, too. That hit me in a way I wasn’t prepared for. It’s a film full of messiness and pain and not always easy to watch, but it’s also incredibly tender. Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands play estranged siblings—both on the edge in different ways—and their performances are breathtaking. Knowing that Cassavetes was seriously ill while making this and had been told he only had months to live just adds another emotional layer. The scene where Rowlands arrives with a cab full of animals—parakeets, ducks, horses!—and her total delight versus his deadpan reaction? One of the funniest and strangest things I’ve ever seen. Love streams, indeed.
