Miles Ahead

Maybe Miles away from Miles?

(Edit) 22/01/2017

Car chase. Guns. Boxing. Maybe Miles in there somewhere? Loosely based on someone who once played amazing trumpet. Music is spot on. Accuracy is probably a bit Hollywood, but they all made a living, and one in the can...............

Pete's Dragon

Great for younger kids.

(Edit) 20/01/2017

Very friendly dragon. Kids will love it. Trying to remember Rob Redford as the suave Great Gatsby, or in the Sting........long time ago..........

Ben-Hur

Sorry. I saw the original

(Edit) 18/01/2017

Why do they do copies of definitive films, or TV characters? Seldom, if ever, works. There is only one Bilko/Willy Wonka etc. Charlton was Ben Hur and El Cid etc. Remake has loads more clever effects, more american accents, but also more make-up, and down home convenience etc. Bit like Troy with not so good hair dressers.

Mechanic: Resurrection

Jason number 28

(Edit) 18/01/2017

Has not got the added bonus of any personality, as in transporter. Normal bish bash bosh, and very thin story line connecting the action segments. Big fans of Jason will watch it, and good to see he is keeping fit.

Life

Oldie but goodie

(Edit) 12/01/2017

Getting a bit slow 17 years on but Eddie still good to watch, maybe better than some later stuff. Martin goes quite well as side kick.

Hit and Run

Dax meets Bradley

(Edit) 12/01/2017

Who is Dax? Not knowingly seen him before. Very like a young Bruce Dern somehow, but nicer with it. Certainly matches up square with Bradley Cooper. Actually quite enjoyed the film. Typical plot of various folk on the road, but flowed along well, and did follow it all the way through!

Danny Collins

Pop Pacino

(Edit) 06/01/2017

Bit of a schmaltzy offering for Al. Most of the old hard case crook types are doing light comedy now. Flows quite well, despite the slightly loose story. Always dodgy doing anything based on music industry!

Nine Lives

Spacey goes spaced out

(Edit) 26/12/2016

Even Kevin, ex proper actor, even stage in UK, has gone for Sky series bandwagon and now becomes a cat. Is OK film for kids at Xmas though. Harmless fun.

Crossfire

De Niro on cruise control

(Edit) 21/12/2016

Pretty much standard format. Lots of meaningful conversations that go on a bit, filling in between the bish bash bosh. Bob went to more comedy roles about now, instead of doing the gangster/cop norm. Garcia done some light ones as well....and Pesci.........and even Liotta not adverse to some Wild Hogs send-up............

Suicide Squad

Will needs some lose change

(Edit) 18/12/2016

Another Dirty Dozen film with the endless characters apparently in Marvel Comics. Not sure how healthy the constant violence of all the modern films is for the audience, especially the younger ones. Violence and killing and maiming in a semi-comedy genre can appear acceptable, or even desirable, to the malleable brain.

Batman has been done pretty well over the years. Iron Man was quite fun, but all the spin-offs are getting quite boring. Noisy and massive computer effects, but very little credible story, or dialogue, or acting. Do you really need so many characters at once?

Certainly childish.....doubtful content for children.....and not nearly clever enough for adults like Deadpool...........so what is the point?

Expect makes millions in the States.

Where is Ed Murphy these days?

Scent of a Woman

Plausible Pacino

(Edit) 18/12/2016

Think the film was given a cold shoulder in States when it came out, but stands up, even today, as a tour de force for Pacino. Solid portrayal of a blind ex-serviceman with all sorts of problems.

Great speech at the boy's school. A young Seymour Hoffman in evidence as well..............

Remember

Plum still going

(Edit) 11/12/2016

Not quite the Boys from Brazil, but goes along OK and has decent twist at the end. Chris was in Sound of Music, how long ago ????

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

Terrapins from the toilet

(Edit) 03/12/2016

They did say people flushed terrapins and alligators down the toilets in New York, and they grew in the sewers! Not sure if kids film, more like a super-heroes with ridiculous abilities genre, but not as clever as Deadpool, or as dark as Batman.

Florence Foster Jenkins

Hugh is actually quite good. Match for Streep

(Edit) 04/12/2016

This topic has been done before, but brought up to date now. Hugh always plays a bit of dodgy lad with ladies, and part suits him well. Meryl is once more on form, and the pianist Simon Helberg is totally spot on. Good casting of someone have not consciously seen before.

Could not write the story and get away with it, so just as well is based pretty much on fact, although in fact she was never married to Bayfield.

One of the few decent films released recently

Christmas Eve

Mel doing lots of films

(Edit) 01/12/2016

Apart from fairly raw dialogue, is nothing really to make a note of. Fairly predictable in most departments. If like banal American then will go for this one.
