Doesn't do a bad job for a low budget movie of creating the fear and tension that must have been present. It's very limited in its scope however, narrowly focused on the desperation and fears a small group of hotel residents to the extent that the scenes became repetitive. Would have been so much better to have given time to the many other aspects of the terrorist action.
Well, I thought it was a dreary American drama and I hated the Coney Island setting. I wasn't impressed with the dialogue or the story line and I was deeply disappointed that Kate Winslet would sign up for this.
Well, I have to say that I thought this was a pretty poor anaemic effort. The hijackers lacked menace and throughout there was a lack of tension, panic and danger. No one's strong personality shone through. And perhaps I'm missing something but I also thought that the ballet scene inserts were luvvie nonsense and totally inappropriate. Nevertheless, it's a story worth telling (again!)
The brilliant Helen Mirren showed yet a gain what a versatile actor she is, but really, why did she agree to this film I wonder. If you like the idea of garnering some cheap laughs from senile behaviour (and failing miserably) you'll love this film.
Grim hill farming family drama. Film4/BFI effort, so you know that that means, don't you? Over played luvvie melodrama, thin plot, no wit, no style, no humour. Well acted though and I enjoyed some of the cinematography.
Quirky black comedy which takes some time to get into the groove. Good acting and well directed, keeps you engaged.
As insubstantial a film as you're likely to see this year. Twittery dialogue, no story line, teenage angst. One for the girls but the other half of the population will need to find something g else to do.
Good plot poorly executed. The lead actor repeatedly overplayed his hand, much of his co-star's diction was unintelligible. Could have done with having subtitles. And do young Americans really have to say fuck in every sentence?
Dear me, what rubbish. I don't know who write the script but the dialogue was abysmal. I didn't get the purpose of the second disc but trust me it's not worth watching and the dialogue is even worse than on the first disc. Throughout, the film is peppered with uninteresting, irrelevant inconsequential scenes which ruin the momentum.
A Luvvie film! Given some piquancy from being a true story and if you like this sort of emotional masochism it was done well enough
I agree , absurd concept but something works because it's strangely watchable. Comic book with luvvy undertones. Refreshingly different, well played by the cast.
Imagine a film with a dreary and largely predictable plot, a cast devoid of personality or charisma, an absence of humour, excitement or surprise. Well, how many stars would you give it? Perhaps it comes across better in its own language and culture , but I doubt it.
Well, the BBC might find American media and politics fascinating but I'm not sure the rest of the world does. This film was boring! A lot of people overplaying their parts. Meryl Streep was terrible, constantly laughing and smiling no matter what. No one it seems could lift this dreary plod above its own sense of self importance. Perhaps you have to be middle aged and American to fully appreciate it.
This film engaged me throughout. A backdrop of sadness and misery was lifted by moments of subtle humour. Excellent acting, some good dialogue, some good music but ultimately one was left wanting.
A powerful film with an unusual chronological structure. Some fine acting. Dastardly men, abused women, scenes of cruelty, be prepared.
