Millionaire Jonathan Reynolds, Jr. (Charles Laughton) is dying. He tells his son Johnny (Robert Cummings) that he has just one wish - to meet the woman Johnny will marry. When he can't get hold of his real fiancee, Johnny 'borrows' a pretty young hatcheck girl named Anne Terry (Deanna Durbin) for his father to meet in her place. Now fate takes a hand. Old Mr Reynolds' health starts to improve - and he's really taken a shine to his 'future daughter-in-law' Anne! He even throws a house party just so that Anne can sing for famous conductor Leopold Stokowski. How can Johnny and Anne tell the old man the truth? Will they have to follow through on their fake relationship - or can they stage a convincing break up? - Actors:

We loved this film,the characters were well drawn and the acting slapstick but terrifically funny.The leads had a great rapport and their comic timing was superlative!

Exactly Where the Fun Lives - It Started with Eve review by griggs
Charles Laughton spends the first act on his deathbed and the rest of it clearly having the time of his life, which tells you exactly where the fun lives here.
Deanna Durbin matches him with bright composure and a wonderfully straight face, even as the deception she has helped create gets messier with every scene. Their scenes together carry the film; you can practically watch them egging each other on.
The plot itself is thin, propped up on fibs that wouldn’t survive five minutes of scrutiny, and I stopped caring about the logic fairly early on. Fortunately, the set-pieces keep finding new ways to turn the nonsense into entertainment.
A silly premise, played by people who clearly knew exactly how much fun silliness could be.
