- Robert Leffingwell (Henry Fonda) is the candidate presented by the President of the United States (Franchot Tone) to the Secretary of State. But the charge must be approved by a Senate subcommittee led by the idealistic Senator Brig Anderson (Don Murray). Opponents Leffingwell, the most conservative part of the subcommittee, see the man chosen by the President as a threat to national security and immediately begin dirty tricks to win the vote of the subcommittee and knock Leffingwell's investiture Great movie... political intrigues directed by Otto Preminger showing the insides of power with a great cast led by Henry Fonda and Charles Laughton in the last role of his career.
