Light on laughs - Brewster's Millions review by RW

Spoiler Alert
07/01/2021

With Richard Pryor and John Candy staring I had high hopes for this 1985 telling Brewster's Millions, unfortunately even with two comedy greats in the film it is light on laughs and has an all to predictable outcome. Not that I went in expecting lots of twists and turns and high drama I had expected this to be better. That isn't to say there are a few light chuckles to be had. I would save your rental unless you're a die hard Pryor fan.

I rented the blu ray which had some nice definition and good sound quality although there clearly hadn't been any love put into restoring the film as there are many scratches, dirt and grime on the picture.

Charming lead, pedestrian script. - Brewster's Millions review by LC

Spoiler Alert

This is an amiable, easy going slice of 80's nostalgia, but it relies almost entirely on the likeable star power of Richard Pryor. The script is functional, but never really examines in any depth the nature of the lead character's rags to riches journey or his relationship with money (indeed, it ends with such shocking haste there's barely any room for any examination of character development at all). This wouldn't matter if it was laugh-out-loud funny, but as a comedy it's also lacking any particularly witty dialogue or amusing jokes. A functional star vehicle, this ambles along pleasantly enough, and isn't awful by any means, but it does feel like it could have been so much more.
