This is the tender and masterfully understated story of Link – a Mi’kmaq teenager who initially denies his own heritage, to the extent of bleaching his hair. He cuts loose from his thug of a father to protect himself and his adored younger half-brother as well as to find his mother - and meets up with Pasmay who is quaintly and non-judgementally described in Mi’kmaq as a two-spirit person (he is gay). The acting by the three boys is exceptional, and there is a stunning – and very funny - bit-part from Desma Michael Thomas as shopkeeper and nephew of father figure Smokey. The subtle beauty of Nova Scotia is shown at its best. I wish there were more films like this that promote minority languages and cultures.
