This was interesting to watch having read the book a few months ago. The novel is related by the characters themselves, one of which is Ben, who never speaks a word in the film. The film is dominated by Joanne Woodward who portrays a fascinating version of Quentin, the girl-woman Quentin. It's about a dysfunctional family of members who seem to have found themselves under the same roof by fate of circumstances. The film is straightforward to understand whereas in the novel you have to work out what is happening by understanding the character of the particular person who is narrating at the time. The colour is splendid for its age (1959).
