With only a little more effort this could have been a good film ! Set in AD 1710-1711 it is about the martial art " sayama hashinryu " - who in Europe has ever even heard of it let alone seen it displayed - why did we never see any real sword skills ? And on the subject of " why " - Why did we see so little of Japan's native forests - Why were the spare swords under an illegible scroll in the homes tokonoma - Why could the peasants afford to use expensive candles yet have no firewood for the irori - Why was almost no use made of the hauntingly beautiful sound of a shakuhachi - And ( most inappropriately ) why was the tune ' Home sweet Home ' played on a harmonica before they had even been imported into Japan - Why did the sewing on the lucky charm look like pagan Chinese seal script and not kanji from the Edo period - Well perhaps one answer is that the aim of the film seems to be to get as many TUBES on screen as humanly possible and this it did extremely well ! TOTALLY UNNECESSARY BREAST EXPOSURES - In fact even Grandma should have joined in to up the count especially given the age of some AV idols and an ageing population ( I include myself in that group ) - So who was this film aimed at ? Given that Lady Okinu is caught having sex with what looks like a 16 year old boy you might wonder ..... straightforward dialogue so ideal for anyone learning to speak everyday Japanese ( any excuse to watch this film over and over again perhaps )
