In Babak Payami's wry satire, an unsuspecting soldier awakens to discover that he can forget about another uneventful day at his remote Iranian island outpost. It's Election Day! A ballot box is parachuted down as a young woman pulls up to the shore, who turns out to be the government election official, much to the surprise of the soldier who was expecting a man. When he is ordered to accompany the idealistic young bureaucrat across the dusty desert in search of votes - a hunt that literally leaves no stone unturned - the soldier is thrown into an electoral adventure that may just put him out of a job. Many a surprise lies along their route, as the unlikely pair find themselves in one absurd situation after another.

Secret Ballot review by chumpy
democracy is arriving! - apparently.

this is an interesting film giving insight into the difficulties of a country tentatively experimenting with the democratic process. we see ballot day on a small island off the coast of Iran where a female election agent from the mainland is escorted around the island by a soldier stationed there. the girl is an idealist with a passion for democracy and a strong belief that it can benefit the people, while the soldier is somewhat jaded. the human aspect of the film is where the charm is - between the two main characters and with the various people they encounter on the island that they encourage to vote. a rather basic film but certainly one that's worth watching.
