Heart Of Glass (aka Herz Aus Glas) (1976)
Herzog's most stylish film. A small village relies on a glass factory for it's employment (in much the same way as mining communities relied on the mines) and when the owner dies taking the formula for ruby glass (given to him by a wandering apocalyptic visionary) to high grave the factory falls into decline then bankruptcy. An allegoric tale told through some of the most intense performances seen on film. A bizarre and compelling story told in a unique way by a master filmmaker.
The cast were put into a hypnotic trance each day to try and re-create a feeling of mass hysteria. This film is crammed with stark, graphic, beautiful and disturbing images that will linger long after the film has ended.

heart of mud
Confused, pretentious dreck from the usually reliable werner herzog. Could only stand ten minutes of this. Avoid at all costs.
