In the tradition of the old Southern storyteller, Fried Green Tomatoes weaves together disparate lives and cherished times. Evelyn (Kathy Bates) is a middle-aged housewife dissatisfied with her life. One day she meets an elderly lady, Mrs Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy) who tells her a story of two young women in the 1930's on a journey through life and love. The friendship of the two girls, Idgie (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth (Mary Louise Parker) inspires Evelyn to improve her life and luck. A warm, touching and at rimes greatly amusing tale about the importance of friendship.

A Long, Worthwhile Journey Through Friendship

This is a film with too many sub-plots to mention. Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy weave truly three-dimensional characters with their "present day" friendship, while Tandy's storytelling leads the viewer effortlessly into the deep 1920s Alabama. If anything, it feels longer than than its two hour length, yet the story and the performances are so engaging that the film is a joy to watch.

Must see

I recommend this as a "must see" film. Well filmed and enjoyable - never dull. A very clever story told in intriguing flash-backs, in combination with excellent filming of the forming of a friendship between Evelyn and Ninny, and cleverly poking fun at some of the worse aspects of modern life.
