Alex Greville, divorced career woman, and Daniel Hirsch, a prosperous Jewish doctor, share a common interest – they are each having an affair with self-involved but beautiful young artist Bob Elkin. Bob divides his time between his two lovers, each of whom is aware of the existence of a rival. Despite this, they are willing to settle for what they can get. Alex and Daniel represent the self-conscious permissiveness of the British middle-class in the early 1970s. They are open-minded about sex, and willing to accept the situation rather than risk losing Bob entirely.
