The Blue Angel

Not for me.

Watched the first disc for half an hour.  Totally unable to engage with this movie which was first made nearly 90 years ago. Won't bother with disc number two.

Ingrid Goes West

Just okay

Not much empathy for the inwardly cold individual that is Ingrid. I should imagine she must have had a dysfunctional upbringing. Unsure of the movie's genre - certainly would not class it as a comedy. Apart from Ingrid's well balanced landlord, most of the other characters in the movie present as shallow and unimpressive individuals.

The Rider

On the fence

I felt I should have enjoyed this movie more than I did. To start with, I could not access the subtitles so missed a lot of the dialogue through really slurred male American accents. It was also nigh on impossible to lip read as along with slurring comes depleted lip movements. I understand the lead was untrained in acting and was indeed very natural, as we're the rest of the cast and appropriate for this laconic and morose movie. The landscape and lighting were a joy to behold but apart from that, it really did not enthrall me.  There were also a couple of distressing scenes involving animals which never fail to upset me.

UFO Chronicles: The Alien Arrivals

American hype

Dreary accounts about supposed alien visitors from the planets, bumped up with irritating atmospheric music/noise, what could be adulterated photographs and artist impression visuals.  The rhetoric from the  'talking head' sounded questionable as well. I should have known better! This site wouldn't accept no stars so there's a reluctant one entry!

The Florida Project

Brilliant!

It's a shame if there are those amongst us that cannot empathise with those trapped in the underclass of modern society. Okay, the language is pretty rough but so are things that are thrown at us from our television sets these days plus a lot of the general conversations of 'grown ups' are littered with expletives. That besides, this is a wonderful film with Brooklynn Prince totally absorbing as the six year old lead - what a find! I also believe Bria Vinaite was also plucked from obscurity, never acted before and gave a tip-top performance as 'Moonie's mother. If she deviated into corruption, it was only because her and her little girl we're trying to survive in a no hope environment. The whole cast were excellent - a movie of true value.

The Breadwinner

Not for me

I am not usually a lover of animated movies but hired this as it was very highly recommended. I am afraid it lived down to my expectations and I did not enjoy it!

Dad's Army: The Movie

Go see

A delightful British comedy, devoid of expletives and a joy to watch. Simple story line held together by excellent acting by the numerous celebrity cast list. Michael Gambon, Toby Jones and Bill Nighy can do no wrong. Catherine Zeta Jones has also matured into a lovely actress, excelling with tongue in cheek scenarios. I had never watched the tv series of Dad's Army so was not acquainted with the characters. This is a stand alone movie anyway.

Columbus

Easy on the eye (and ears)

Quite a nice little movie. The static camera work and lack of background music made it a bit different. Also very naturally acted by the two main leads. I cannot read any more into it than that.

Beast

Nice try

Excellent acting from Jessie Buckley (plus a well honed English accent from this Irish lady). Johnny Flynn portrays the man in her life. Until I checked him out, I didn't realise he was also a singer. He has great potential with cinematic good looks and great acting skills. Bit of a mish mash of drama, horror and psychological guessing games. I am still not quite sure who was the protagonist and who the antagonist but it was quite enjoyable

McKellen: Playing the Part

A real trouper

If you're a McKellen fan you'll enjoy this. From a lowly upbringing 'up North', he managed to realise a life long ambition and get on to the stage and then into films. Dropping his northern accent along the way, he acquired an appropriate thespian voice and became the actor we all know and love. In the interview, he came across as a well balanced and very likeable individual although I do suspect he has more if a wicked sense of humour than he was letting on!

Widows

Nothing too in depth here!

If you can tolerate the too many expletives and the violence, you may enjoy this movie. It is fast paced and pretty much an unbelievable scenario but it is entertaining.

Olive Kitteridge: Series

FMcD shines again

A quiet and morose production but not without humour. It mainly presents the dynamics between Olive and her husband, Henry. Olive is a harsh person who doesn't suffer fools gladly. She is not kind to her husband (or anybody else comes to that) yet you feel there is a soft and loving person very deep inside but she is never able to bring this to the fore. Henry obviously idolises Olive and tends to take everything she verbally throws at him. Although slow moving, the production holds the attention throughout. Frances McDormand can never do any wrong and in my opinion, is the best female actress in Hollywood today. Richard Jenkins as her husband and Bill Murray (who materialises towards the end) are also very natural and excellent players. I should think this production would possibly appeal more to an older audience but I could well be wrong.

Cold War

Comme ci comme ca

A strange little movie about a love story which starts after the Second World War and carries on over many years. Akin to historic black and white movies of the last century, this is a bleak presentation without any humour and flits about from one European country to another. The acting by the two leads is faultless as are the authentic scenes of a post war Europe. Although quite gloomy and non uplifting, seamless directing makes this film relatively watchable.

A Star Is Born

A real diamond

I can only iterate review by MG. I was not expecting much but was totally blown away by this incredible movie. Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga are without doubt, major talents. Not only did they act in it but they both wrote and performed most of the songs. Mr Cooper also directed and co-wrote the screenplay. Wonderful chemistry between the two leads and superb camerawork. A beautiful, seamless movie and not a minute too long. Apart from one song, how could they have ignored this masterpiece at the 2019 Oscars?!!! Shame on them ??

Hostiles

Unique

With harrowing opening shots and uncomfortable viewing throughout, this is a movie with a difference. It is extremely well crafted and shows the different perspectives of issues that were around in the old west. There are excellent performances from the two English leads, Christian Bale and Rosalind Pyke. The movie unfolds at a leisurely pace and the scenery is spectacular at times. It is over two hours in length and is thoroughly absorbing.
