Synopsis:
On the 11 th August 1968, British Rail ran its final steam passenger train from Liverpool Lime Street for a tour that would be forever remembered as the 'Fifteen Guinea Special'. Almost 40 years to the day later, on 10th August 2008, The West Coast Railway Company ran another 'Fifteen Guinea Special' designed to duplicate - as far as possible - that historic journey. The special tour left Liverpool Lime Street pulled by 8F 48151 Gauge O Guild for Manchester Victoria, where it was then pulled by Britannia Class Pacific 70013 Oliver Cromwell over the picturesque Settle and Carlisle Route to Carlisle station.
At Carlisle a double header of Black 5's took the special express as far as Blackburn, where one of the Black 5's was uncoupled and the train pulled by the remaining loco back into Liverpool. 'The Anniversary Expres's is an essential film record of this historic tour, with camera crews at numerous track-side and station locations recording the spectacle throughout the day and into the night. An expert commentary provides an insight into the day's events, and provides a fascinating comparison with the running of the original 'Fifteen Guinea Special' forty years before.
