Synopsis:
Purantanpalli was a town of the rich feudal lords and one of the relics of the old days is the bordello in the center of the town. Now changes have taken place in the area of the new mercantile class want the red light district is not considered right. Rukmini Bai (Shabana Azmi), the madame of the bordello, tries her best to preserve the 'image' of her house as a high class place, but she does not succeed. The other occupants of this place are Kamli, Nadira, Parveena (Anita Kanwar) and Zeenat (Smita Patil). The elders of the town decide to evict the women. Gupta (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), a real estate developer offers to house the women to a barren ruin called Maula Ali.
Soon it becomes a pilgrimage centre and Rukminibai's also thrives. Now there is a slight complication as the mayor Aggarwal's son Sushil (Aditya Bhattacharya) falls in love with Zeenat. Rukminibai reveals that Zeenat is the illegitimate daughter of Aggarwal (Saeed Jaffrey) and half sister of Sushil. So this marriage cannot take place. Meanwhile this place also become very popular and Rukniinibai is again threatened with eviction. Gupta now makes a deal with the latter. Zeenat plans to run away with Sushil. The plot thickens...
