Nanny McPhee (2005)
Emma Thompson, whose first screenplay won the 1995 Oscar for Sense and Sensibility, returns to screenwriting with Nanny McPhee, a motion picture adaptation of the "Nurse Matilda" books by Christianna Brand. Thompson, the only person to have won Oscars for both acting and writing, also plays the title role in Nanny McPhee, opposite Colin Firth, Kelly Macdonald and-in her first role for the big screen in two decades-Angela Lansbury. In this dark and witty fable, Thompson portrays a person of unsettling appearance and magical powers who enters the household of the recently widowed Mr. Brown (Firth) and attempts to tame his seven exceedingly ill-behaved children. The children, led by the oldest boy Simon (Love Actually's Thomas Sangster), have managed to drive away 17 previous nannies and are certain that they will have no trouble with this one. But as Nanny McPhee takes control, they begin to notice that their vile behavior now leads swiftly and magically to rather startling consequences. Her influence also extends to the family's deeper problems, including Mr. Brown's sudden and seemingly inexplicable attempts to find a new wife; an announcement by the domineering Aunt Adelaide (Angela Lansbury) that she intends to take one of the children away; and the sad and secret longings of their scullery maid, Evangeline (Kelly Macdonald). As the children's behavior begins to change, Nanny McPhee's arresting face and frame appear to change as well, creating even more questions about this mysterious stranger whom the children and their father have come to love.

Emma's Back!
What a great little film! I loved it's charm, simplicity and the cast - including the kids are great. It's so good seeing Emma Thompson back on top - we always preferred you to Kenneth! Her performance is great and Colin Firth and Kelly MacDonald should also get a mention for thier perfrect chemistry. Imelda Staunton is wonderful as always, as the mad cook. The story line is predictable, but that doesn't matter. Some of the practical jokes played by the children are genius and I only wish I'd had the guts to do stuff like that when I was little! I would watch this film if you have a house full of kids and it's raining, or if there are no kids around, watch it anyway instead of the eaastenders omnibus - you'll come away with a nice warm feeling.

Nanny McPhee - Perfect family viewing
A modern version of Mary Poppins in the typically camp, if not slightly over the top American style of gothic filmaking akin to films like 'A series of unfortunate Adventures' and the remake of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'. The actors camp it up in fine style and actually look like they had great fun making the film. Not being familiar with the original 'Nurse Matilda' stories, from which this is taken, I found the storyline to be very thin. The special effects were everywhere, but not that special. And it really did look like the film makers had pinched scenes from lots of other peoples films, such as the winter scenes from 'Narnia', or the witchy scenes from Road Dahl's 'Witches' etc. But the whole film is brought together in such a lighthearted, wickedly camp way, that makes for a great family film. A real romp of fun. Children and adults will love this film and associate themselves with the characters, you can really get inside and get carried away with all the action. For those with hearing loss, the subtitles in English are good. And as this is presented in widescreen format, the subtitles appear on the bottom black section, nicely complimenting rather than struggling with the film.

Great for children
Very well put together and well acted film that missed being great by a whisker. I think there is just a little too much sugar at the end and the writing could have been a little tighter but overall excellent entertainment. Emma Thompson in particular was splendid in the title role although all the performances were of a high standard.
