Rent And a Nightingale Sang (1988)

Set in Newcastle towards the end of World War 2, this romantic drama chronicles the sacrifices made by a blue-collar woman and her family. This is the story of the Stotts, an eccentric family waging their personal battles against the terrifying backdrop of Britain during WW2. Adapted from the novel by C.P. Taylor. Amidst the air raid sirens and fears of poison gas, Mam frets about church bombings.... Dad spouts communism while pounding the piano... Grandpa mourns his dead whippet... daughters Joyce and Helen grasp fervently at the joys, frustrations and heartbreaks of firs love.
With a constellation of British acting stars, "And A Nightingale Sang" is a touching and richly comic account of this Geordie family's war.
