In Victorian London, independent Dr. Eleanor Bramwell (Jemma Redgrave) defies societal conventions by pursuing her chosen profession, and after she is fired for disagreeing with a male doctor, wealthy Lady Peters helps her open a free clinic in a poor neighborhood. Although Bramwell grows more skilled as a physician and earns the respect of her patients in the East End, her attempts at romance falter, much to the dismay of her devoted father.
