This adventure drama is set in 1927 Chicago. The story surrounds Jimmy and his two Liverpool pals who work as lowly waiters on the Mauretania, steaming towards America. Always on the make, the three lads are pinning their hopes on making enough money to jump ship and start a new life in the US. They plan a ruse which nets them six bottles of gin from the ship's stores. Unwittingly, they sell it to two gangsters on the New York quayside. Jimmy, a talented bare knuckle fighter, soon gets the attention of Georgio, one of the gangsters, who turns out to be right hand man to Al Capone. Seeing him as a source of income, Georgio takes Jimmy on as a boxer, while the two pals, Eddie and Dan are given menial jobs in one of Capone's warehouses. It soon becomes clear that the trio have got themselves into a dangerous business, as Capone starts to wage war on his opponents, with the lads as pawns. A further complication is created by Jimmy's attraction to the beautiful Edith, Georgio's girlfriend. When Capone's son is kidnapped and the Lad's are implicated, it's time to get out of town. But not before Jimmy's fight and a small matter of removing the contents of Capone's vault, to pay for their trouble. Whilst Jimmy prepares for the big fight, Eddie and Dan, already on the run, plan the heist. They agree to rendezvous after the fight, but will they be successful and will they be able to escape the clutches of the gangsters?
