Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Different is good.

(Edit) 03/05/2018

Different to first film. Which is wise, cause that was brilliant, with Fox and Williams doing their thing well, plus superb shots and edit.

Could just about stand Jack Black in it......and that's a first.

No swearing.........and that makes it stand out, if nothing else!

Bit like Tropic of Thunder for the younger audience............pair of fun jungle films..............

American Made

Not as good as Blow

(Edit) 30/04/2018

Rolls along, and basic substance of the scandal is about right! What was Ronnie thinking?.....sorry, When was Ronnise thinking?.......Bless him.

Blow was the distribution side true-story with Depp. Both films tend to do a Billy the Kid or Jesse James pastiche.......glorification of making easy money out of the huge misery and vice associated with the drug industry.........not heroes. Not even nice people. After a long, and self indulgent , innings, they got their just deserts. Although the Depp guy was luckier to spend many years behind bars.............

Wolf Hall: Series

Quite long

(Edit) 22/04/2018

Brilliant acting, as would expect. Could not read the books at all. Is a bit looooong and drawn out when seen in a block.............

The Life and Death of Peter Sellers

Rushing about on set

(Edit) 19/04/2018

Geoff had his work cut out......almost a Seller's job. Not very kind to Sellers, but perhaps they were using known material.

The Hundred Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared

Jim Jarmusch missed this one.

(Edit) 19/04/2018

Bit zany, but also different from the norm. Never do subtitles in any form, but battled through it as is quite a quite but clever take on old age. If he was a 100 he had better knees than me by miles

Dunkirk

Dirk Bogarde could have done better.

(Edit) 18/04/2018

Have to confess, Jack Hawkins and co had these war films taped up. Compared to Private Ryan, was like a film made for TV. As another critic has pointed out, was like a meet on Weston Super Mare beach. The average Tommy was portrayed as a modern style misery from the estate. Having met "Tommy" as a kid living in a pub in the 50's, they were stoic and good humoured. A lot had a better time in the war than they did at home! For some it remained the pinnacle of their existence. One day working long hours in terrible factory conditions, walking or biking miles to work in all weathers (with no Barbour jacket and Hunter boots), and the next driving a tank in the desert . Some truly remarkable stories of survival, and terrible pain and death as well.

Dunkirk appeared to be another colossal management balls up, with the error dumped on Tommy and Jack Tar......as always......How come the Germans failed to wipe them all out is a mystery.

Have seen the little boats that went from even the Thames estuary to get troops back, and although the numbers they actually brought were small compared to other transports, their courage and resource was amazing. I wish just half of that spirit could be mustered up today. When you see the gang crime in London it makes one wonder........a land fit for heroes??

The Barchester Chronicles

Old series, and slow, but Rickman's practically first outing

(Edit) 13/04/2018

Very slow by modern standards, but True Detective went on and on relentlessly! All top stage actors in those days so can hear the words!!

Final Portrait

Don't Rush it.

(Edit) 13/04/2018

Geoffrey always worth watching, but is a fairly slow film, with nobody helping to bring it alive much. Long way from Our Man in Havana with Piers and co..............

Same Kind of Different as Me

Hounsou to watch

(Edit) 07/04/2018

Hounsou pretty much carries the film. Not sure what he has done before, but is way competent. Greg does his normal thing competently. Renee is pretty good, once recognise who she is! Based loosely on truth as we cannot think of anything to make films about now. Any bit of story or folklore can be stretched into near 2 hours, provided a couple of credible pics at end, to show how well the make-up dept. did................

The Limehouse Golem

Bill goes straight.

(Edit) 07/04/2018

To be fair, not as good as Depp's 2001 From Hell, but goes well. Bill shows can do it fairly straight if given the chance.

Paddington 2

Better than first one.

(Edit) 07/04/2018

Some good people in this. Hugh Grant actually quite good, puts some effort in for sure. Good laugh that they all live in £10 million houses......some on their own.......cannot all be drug dealers, and none are Russian !!! Harks back to Mary poppins and Peter Pan era, when very rich folk had little to do, so wrote children's stories...............I guess today it reverses, Rollings writes some kids books, then gets the 10 mill houses. Probably quite a few of them, all over the world..............

American Assassin

Near Bourne area.

(Edit) 29/03/2018

Lot of attempts to equal the Bourne films. This is pretty good of the genre. Bit more roadrunner/Segal orientated. Slightly less believable than the simpler Bournes, as so many dead bodies strewn about at individual shoot outs. Death toll mounts. Apart from American schools, and Turkey etc, never get such cowboy events in reality.

Danger that the violence becomes necessary, and is over-portrayed. Not quite realistic..........in a way so gory as to be OK, as is not accurate....... so in a bizarre way can be handled on a surreal plane.

Keaton is focussed......he loves it all day......must of had fun. Bet Hopkins had giggles all the way through Hannibal...............

True Detective: Series 1

Two good men

(Edit) 18/03/2018

Great pair of redneck actors, with pretty good Louisiana drawl. Probably OK on TV, but when watch in laaaarge chunks, is a handful of constant dialogue.

If was compressed into a 2 hour film would have been top job. Hours and hours of the two main men talking it up and up does diminish it a bit as a single event.

Perhaps best to watch an episode each week......as per intention............

Maybe see Mud, and Out of the Machine, to see the two guys do their thing..............

Murder on the Orient Express

Murder of good old film on dialogue express

(Edit) 15/03/2018

Original film would obviously be very slow now, but the gravitas of those taking part would still show through. Depp and Dench just rhymes with disappear. Just shows how great Connery and Finney and Bergman and Bacall were!

All we need now is Steve Martin do another Bilko.

Cannot anyone come up with new ideas? Disney are re-making all sorts of classics.

Alan Badel WAS the Count of Monte Cristo, Jeremy Brett WAS D'artagnan with Blessed AS Porthos.

Cannot re-make a definitive execution , so why bother.

Next year they will re-make Gangs of New York with Andy Pandy as Cutting...............
