- Based on the true events from 1927 infamous Steglitz Student tragedy in the Weimar Republic. In the volatile era betweens wars, two young men share a romantic view of life and its possibilities. They differ greatly: Paul (Daniel Brühl), a shy poet, comes from a working-class family, while daredevil Guenther (August Diehl), hales from the wealthy upper class. Rebellious and passionate, both boys reject their parents' empty world. They create a pact: At the point when love fails them, they will end their lives. One weekend at a bohemian party, this reckless agreement is put to the ultimate test.

Intelligent & Atmospheric German Drama - Love in Thoughts review by CP Customer
This is a story of tangled relationships and, to some extent, obsession and is based on true events set in the 1920’s. Paul is in love with Hilde who is currently enjoying sex with the ex boyfriend of her brother (Gunther). Gunther, of course, is still in love with his ex which all leads to a complex and emotional battle of wills. The movie unfolds slowly and some people might find the pace too slow. It is however beautifully shot with atmospheric lighting and excellent performances all round. The score adds to the atmosphere and highlights an underlying tension and eroticism between the four main characters. There is also a constant feeling of sadness throughout the whole of the film. Not one for action lovers….more for lovers of deep, sophisticated and moody European films.

Enjoyable German Teenage Drama Festering with Sexual Jealously, based on a true story from 1927 - Love in Thoughts review by PV
I liked this. It's a surprising coy sexually-charged drama based on a real story from 1927. Not sure what has been invented or adapted therefore, as with any films 'based on a true story.
The undercurrent of festering sexual jealously and tension is done well, reflected in the sweltering heat and then the rain breaking. The acting is great. Well-written.
