Synopsis:
The Great War documents the first world wide conflict; from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand to the Armistice on 11th November, 1918. In between, millions perished at Ypres, Verdun, the Somme and globally. It saw the introduction of the tank, the airplane, submarine warfare and the use of poison gas; and on the home front the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps and the first raids. 1916 saw the carnage increase to new levels. In February, the Germans began their assault on the forts at Verdun. In the East the Russians launched the Brusilov Offensive whilst the British initiated the Battle of Somme with terrible loss of life for little gain.
At sea, the dreadnoughts of the Royal Navy and German high seas fleet clashed at Jutland in the war's one substantial sea battle.
