Synopsis:
The Mosquito Story is the definitive film history of the deHavilland Mosquito, from the early prototype test flights to the final decommissioning of the aircraft in 1963. Designed with a revolutionary wooden frame and originally intended as a bomber, the Mosquito proved faster than any fighter of its day and was quickly adapted to nightfighter, fighter-bomber, ground attack and photo reconnaissance roles. Equipped with cameras, bombs, machine guns, cannon, 57mm 'tankbuster' gun or rockets, it was unequalled. Because of its superb flying characteristics, it was chosen for some of the most daring low level raids of the war including attacks on Gestapo.
Headquarters and Amiens prison, rare footage of which is included on this DVD. Making extensive use of deHavilland's own archive footage as well as RAF film and stunning close up air-to-air photography, this DVD features the Mosquito in all of its wartime roles. Legendary RAF fighter ace John 'Cat's Eyes' Cunningham provides a graphic first hand account of what it was like to fly the Mosquito as a night fighter, and explains how the top secret onboard radar worked, while Reg Davey, a Mosquito navigator with a wartime 'Pathfinder' squadron recalls the vital role the aircraft played in locating enemy targets at night This DVD also includes rare footage of ground attack strikes, Mosquito carrier operations, low level 'bouncing bomb' practice runs and bomber variants being loaded with 40001b 'blockbusters', as well as dramatic footage of Coastal Command variants launching rocket salvo attacks against German shipping in the Norwegian Fjords. Also featured is rare colour film of the silver-finish target tug variants recorded flying in formation shortly before being decommissioned. Made with the help and co-operation of the Mosquito Museum, Salisbury Hall, and the RAF Museum, Hendon, The Mosquito Story is a powerful tribute to one of the RAF's most exciting aircraft.
