In 'Maria Marten' (1935),Squire (Slaughter) abuses Maria (Sophie Stewart),a young country girl,and kills her after he finds out she's pregnant with his child. Maria,however,does not rest in peace. In 'Crimes at the Dark House' (1940),a psychopath (Slaughter) murders a wealthy man and then assumes his identity to take control of his large estate. He plots to wed a rich heiress and kills anyone who is suspicious of his true identity.
