- Fredric March stars as Valjean, the ex-convict who rises against all odds from galley slave to mayor. Terrific performances - well worth renting - Les Miserables review by MR
Frederic March and Charles Laughton give fantastic performances as the two leads. The plot varies in many ways from that of the book, if that is likely to upset you, however what you get is very exciting. Seems to have had a lot of money spent on it, complicated sets , big crowd scenes, so it looks good, although the music is embarrassingly obvious. However the crucial thing is the two leads, and they are both stunning in their roles. Lots of lingering beautifully lit close-ups of the faces of both - and why not, Frederic March is absolutely compulsive viewing. Enjoyed it enormously.
