Synopsis:
Based on Brian Moore's acclaimed novel, "Black Robe" is the brutal and breathtaking story of two men and their perilous adventure deep into the heart of the rugged Canadian wilderness. In the harsh winter of 1634, an idealistic Jesuit priest and his naive young companion are escorted through the wilderness of Quebec by Algonquin Indians, to visit a distant mission. Theirs is a journey fraught with danger and the threat of violence from hostile natives. Father Laforgue (Lothaire Bluteau) opens his heart to the harsh and unforgiving country and its people. His companion Daniel (Aden Young) is drawn to the beauty close at hand, falling in love with fellow traveller Annuka (Sandrine Holt).
But as they attempt the arduous 1,500 mile trek upriver, the testing elements and the ever-present shadow of death are never far behind.

The film gives a harsh and unromantic view of what Native American life was like. Their problem dealing with the developing power of Europeans, in this case seeking to change their beliefs.

I nearly gave this 4,perhaps 3& a half.Brutal film showing the real life of the early colonists. The indians came over as savages not the Hollywood portrayal.Scenery was

excellent showing the harshness of the land. The ending was not the happy Hollywood one but more realistic.I did not know any of the actors but they played their parts

well.Worth watching.

A brilliant and sensitive film based around an excellent novel by Brian Moore.  Coherent plot, beautifully photographed, excellent acting and very thought provoking, it keeps up the tempo to the end.
