Immediately after the attacks on September 11, 2001, the U.S. government deployed fewer than 100 Special Forces troops to Afghanistan to initiate a secret war. Building a coalition with the rebels of the Northern Alliance, the U.S. troops managed to drive both the Taliban and Al-Qaeda out of power without the use of conventional, large-scale military operations by the end of 2001. Despite this victory, the U.S. and its allies soon become mired in a seemingly never-ending war.
