From the Alps to the North Sea, flowing through big cities, dramatic landscapes and romantic valleys, Monty Don explores extraordinary gardens shaped by the mighty River Rhine. He begins in Switzerland, where he travels to an alpine garden 1,900 metres above sea level that displays a remarkable collection of mountain plants. From there, Monty drops down to the balmy waters of Lake Constance, which is fed by the Rhine and also borders Austria and Germany, and there he visits an entire island garden nestled in its own microclimate. Monty's river Rhine travels finally take him to the Netherlands and the biggest display of tulips in the world.
