The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg (1964)
Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival, and available for the first time on DVD, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is an unforgettable story of a lost love, told entirely in song. Set in the small French seaside town of Cherbourg, the lives and hopes of shop-girl Genevieve (Catherine Deneuve) and her garage mechanic boyfriend, Guy (Nino Castelnuovo), are shattered when he is drafted to... fight in the Algerian war. Discovering that she is pregnant, Genevieve decides to marry the decent and honourable diamond merchant, Roland Cassard (Marc Michel), but lives with the knowledge that her true love lies elsewhere. After Guy's return from the war, it is a frosty Esso filling station on Christmas Eve that provides the unlikely setting for the lovers' next meeting.
