Really Enjoyable Australian OTT Comedy Horror - 100 Bloody Acres review by PV

Spoiler Alert
28/01/2021

I really enjoyed this Aussie movie. It's a farcical OTT comedy horror - like a comic version of Wolf Creek or Wrong Turn.

Some original and laugh-out-loud moments. The Brit trippy traveller fake hippy is hilarious. No spoilers but loads of fun had with that. Horrific trippy fun.

The only thing I though misfired was the more sexual element introduced, no doubt for shock value. Not even sure one female character is needed in that third act. Not a really believable plot or character arc but so what?

But a really good fun popcorn movie. Grand Guignol comedy horror and really great fun.

4 stars.

100 Bloody Acres review by George Hooper - Cinema Paradiso

Much like the 2009 film The Loved Ones, 100 Bloody Acres is a surreal horror film from start to finish with some outlandish characters whose priorities are clearly not quite right. However the film never really feels like a horror film, in fact its hard to come out of 100 Bloody Acres without finding it completely hilarious.

The film follows brothers Reg (Damon Herriman) and Lindsay (Angus Sampson), two country folk trying to run a successful fertilizer business. However when three people heading to a music festival cross their paths things get complicated for the two brothers as they try and hide their extra curricular activities with not much success at all.

Going into it, you have no idea what to expect from the film, its bright, fairly unimposing and the characters are fairly pleasant. In fact Herriman makes Reg one of the nicest possible murderers to ever grace the screen. Lindsay however is a misunderstood sort, a city man in a country job. While the two brothers stick together, they couldn’t be further apart in what each of them wants.

Not only is the film wonderfully clever but the script is full of plenty of one liners and disturbing comic moments. Reg’s twisted attachment to one of their captives, Sophie (Anna McGahan) provides most of the films laughs as they proceed to have a twisted and awful courtship that subverts the films horrific content so that the film really feels like a disturbed love story.

It’s not a perfect film, the beginning takes a while to get going and some of the side characters seem pointless but when you have a chase scene around a village filled with mannequins while one of the victims is tripping acid you really can’t complain as 100 Bloody Acres turns out to be a comic gem
