Victoria was just 18 when she ascended to the throne. Stubborn and fiercely independent, she rejected her manipulative and greedy mother and declared that she might never marry. However, when Victoria met the handsome German Prince, Albert, she fell in love and a marriage of convenience was transformed into a lifelong romance. For Albert the marriage was initially one of duty, however, as their relationship developed the Prince grew to admire and love Victoria. Excluded from holding and official political position, Albert worked hard to gain both respect of the young Queen and her subjects and became King in everything but name.
