Middle aged, world-weary psychology professor Richard Wanley finds himself suddenly captivated by a portrait of a beautiful young woman in the window of a local gallery. In a strange twist of fate the woman in the picture appears before Richard and invites him back to her apartment. Everything seems to be going fine until Wanley is attacked by her possessive boyfriend and ends up murdering him in self-defence. Now the mild mannered academic has a body to dispose of, a calculating dame to deal with, heat from the cops looking for the missing victim and someone with blackmail on their mind. Extreme situations need extreme solutions and the desperate professor is about to make a deadly decision. Directed by the legendary Fritz Lang and starring Edward G. Robinson, this is the film that broke the mould of Hollywood thrillers. One of the original movies to be called "film noir" by French critics.
