Synopsis:
'Chungking Express', cult filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai's hugely influential international breakthrough, is a supremely stylish combination of love story and thriller, set in and around Hong Kong's infamous Chungking Mansions, a vast complex of shabby hostels, bars and clubs. The film tells the stories of two lovelorn cops and the women with whom they become involved: a mysterious drug dealer dressed in a blonde wig and sunglasses, and an impulsive young dreamer.

Brash Hong Kong Style - Chungking Express review by CP Customer

Spoiler Alert

Returning to Chungking Express does not diminish the brilliance of Christopher Doyle's cinematography. The lighting, colours and tapestry that he weaves onscreen are extremely vivid and distinctive. Unfortunately the quality of the DVD transfer is not as pristine as it deserves to be. This doesn't hamper your enjoyment of these two Hong Kong love tales, each thankfully completely different. Both feature a unique charm, and take you on a voyage of Hong Kong at night. A modern classic in the making.

Falling in Love, Losing the Plot - Chungking Express review by griggs

Spoiler Alert

The pinnacle of existential cinema where two love-struck policemen meander through the neon-lit labyrinth of Hong Kong. Who wouldn’t be riveted by a plot that flows like a dream or mildly confusing hallucination? With their whims and quirks, the characters offers a profound exploration of… well, something deep, I’m sure. And the cinematography? Absolutely breathtaking if you enjoy a visual buffet of quick cuts and kaleidoscopic colours. Truly it’s a film for those who appreciate the fine art of being bewildered and entertained all at once.

Simply a brilliant film. - Chungking Express review by CP Customer

This is a twinned love story that has the feel of a modern 'Breathless' ('A Bout de Souffle').

The overall 'look' of the film represents a triumph of cinematography. There is a lightness of touch and a subtle wit about the whole enterprise.

This is not ultimately as satisfying and profound as Wong Kar Wei's 'In the Mood for Love', but it is a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
