- Those screw-loose Airplane! creators have done it again! Leslie Nielsen stars as Police Squad's own granite-jawed, rock-brained cop Frank Drebin, who bumbles across a mind-control scheme to assassinate Queen Elizabeth. Priscilla Presley, O.J. Simpson, a stuffed beaver, two baseball teams and an odd assortment of others join the wacko goings-on and blow the laugh-o-meter to smithereens.

Just for Nielsen - The Naked Gun! review by JD
Leslie Nielsen is an icon of modern slapstick comedy. There is no one who comes close in sustaining the force of one liners, physical silly comedy and the plot of the drama. Priscilla keeps up fairly well for a celebrity's daughter,but who let OJ Simpson in? Quite a lot of comedy for Americans which might leave Brits a bit lost, I'm thinking mainly of baseball. Leslie alone is utterly fantastic, every thing else is satisfactory.

Eager Beaver - The Naked Gun! review by Steve
Obviously like Airplane (1980) but this time spoofing '70s cop shows. Maybe it won't play for younger audiences, as they are unlikely to have done the prep by wasting their childhood watching Kojak and Starsky and Hutch on tv. Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker return to their brief, unsuccessful network series, Police Squad!
They repeat many of the same gags, while borrowing a few from others- the exchange about shooting murderers in Central Park, who are actors performing Julius Caesar, is taken almost verbatim from Dirty Harry (1971). And fans of Raymond Chandler will recognise two direct lifts, which may be intended as tributes...
On second viewing, the biggest laugh is Leslie Nielsen as Lieutenant Frank Drebin, outside the sky-high hotel window of a busty visitor, hanging from the huge stone phallus of a giant statue... which is an indication of how sophisticated this is... but it's still funny. And this gets nearer to why it is still so bloody hilarious.
There's slapstick, a whole lot of puns and dad jokes and absurd non-sequiturs... But it only really pays off because of Nielsen. Is this one of the all-time comic performances? Sure, he's just doing schtick, but he transforms so-so material into comedy gold. Hard to imagine even the legendary Peter Sellers surpassing this...

Hilarious Slapstick Comedy from the Gloriously Funny Days before pc & woke ended Comedy - The Naked Gun! review by PV
Great stuff. Not as funny as AIRPLANE! but still up there, so 4 stars.
Loads of silly jokes, word play - BINGO! - visual gags and a high hit rate.
These films worked because of the sheer frequency of the gags SO if one falls flat, never mind, another will hit home a second later.
It is what it is and MADE ME LAUGH unlike most modern Hollywood comedies.
if you are prissy, po-faced pc or woke you'll hate it. Your problem really.
