Synopsis:
He cut his teeth as an assistant on some of the greatest films in cinema history: Visconti's 'Obsession', Rossellini's 'Rome', 'Open City' De Sica's 'Bicycle Thieves'. His eye for black-and-white film was masterful, but it was his innovations in colour with Antonioni's 'Red Desert' and 'Blow-Up', in the mid-1960s, that set him apart as a genius of the medium.

Film buff heaven - Water and Sugar: Carlo Di Palma, the Colours of Life review by Alphaville

A warm-hearted documentary about the great Italian cinemaphotographer Carlo di Palma, from his early work in post-war monochrome neorealism, through his contributions to the great Antonioni films such as Red Desert and Blow-up, to the dozen films he made with Woody Allen. With contributions from lots of famous directors and loads of film clips, this is a treasure trove for anyone interested in film. As di Palma himself says : ‘Life is less beautiful without a good film.’

Wonderful dip into delicious films - Water and Sugar: Carlo Di Palma, the Colours of Life review by SoniaGee

If you like classic Italian films, in particular, this is a a way of linking them all together, by Carlo di Parma, who worked on most of them.

90 minutes of pleasure.

His eye for the framing, and his exacting colour selection, e.g. "ripe red apple", as opposed to "just a red", when putting a scene together, before filming

improved what would have been a good film, to a wonderful one.

I enjoyed being reminded of all these classic films, often black and white, from the masters of film over several years since WWll.

I don't do ratings often, but this was a must.
