Synopsis:
Invalided out of the army during the First World War, David Powlett-Jones is sent for an interview to a large public school in Devon. He seriously doubts his ability to cope with teaching but the affable headmaster, Algy Herries, has other ideas. Powlett-Jones arrives at Bamfylde, absolutely unconvinced that he will be suitable for the teaching job he's been sent for. The Headmaster is very persuasive and Powlett-Jones decides to stay. After a shaky start Powlett-Jones is getting to grips with the boys' pranks, questions and heartaches. But he still feels uneasy with the other members of staff. A visit to Wales brings a pleasant romantic surprise.
Powlett-Jones prepares mentally and physically for his forthcoming wedding and asks his colleague Ian Howarth to be his best man. School War Memorial meetings get very heated. Herries appoints a female teacher which has extraordinary effect on both staff and pupils. Beth gives birth and Powlett-Jones becomes a hero when disaster strikes the school. Powlett-Jones takes a gamble and appoints Boyer as House Captain. A boy goes missing from the school and Herries and Powlett-Jones search the countryside.
