Set at the run of the century, Joseph Rudd (Leo McKern) decides to move his family to a rural selection (a small farm) in Queensland, Australia. It's a tough life in the bush, what with the lousy weather, marsupials, reptiles, insects and other vermin, but the Rudds try to make a go of it as best they can. With comic capers as Joseph puts his family through crazy money-making schemes that hardly ever work and as they struggle against a bad harvest and mad neighbour Riley who hates selectors, they have to stick together through thick and thin to keep the family together and the selection going.
