Synopsis:
Continuing the popular and heart-warming BBC series, based on Flora Thompson's memoir of life in late 19th century rural Oxfordshire. This charming series set in a small hamlet and its neighbouring town sees the return of favourite characters such as Dorcas, Laura, the Pratts, Alf and Minnie - and a fond welcome home for Alf's mother, Caroline. Candleford has a new arrival in Gabriel Cochrane, the handsome and once wealthy owner of a large iron foundry - now bankrupt and homeless and looking for a fresh start. Dorcas offers him a job and a home, and the people of Candleford take him to their hearts.
But will Gabriel manage to shake off the ghosts of his past and embrace a new life? And will Dorcas stop meddling in other people's lives long enough to find happiness for herself? Elsewhere, a heartbroken Ruby Pratt returns home to find Daniel settled in all too comfortably at the Stores; Emma is left reeling when financial disaster strikes; Alf and Minnie's romance blossoms; and Twister tests Queenie's patience to the limit with his most audacious money-making scheme yet.

An excellent final series - Lark Rise to Candleford: Series 4 review by RP

Spoiler Alert
07/10/2015

This is/was the final series of the BBC production of 'Lark Rise to Candleford'. It is 6 episodes long rather than the longer runs of 10, 12 and 12 episodes for the earlier series and it was cancelled afterwards, despite continuing popularity. I have heard that the reason was that the series' originator, Bill Gallagher, had become interested in 'other things' and without him there was no appetite for yet another series.

It's still pretty good, although after 40 episodes in total things do seem to get a bit 'samey'. This time round, the coming of change to the countryside and the way of life becomes more obvious as mechanisation is seen to creep in and Alf Arless has to choose between a steady job and continued work on the land. And having watched every episode of every series back-to-back in several mammoth viewing sessions (thank you Mrs RP!) the character of Dorcas Lane has become more than a little annoying...

The production values are high (no-one does period costume drama better than the Beeb), the acting and characterisation are good, the locations are good - what more can I say other than that it is yet another excellent drama series. 5/5 stars.
