A none stop shoot out, not a single scene where people are not screaming at the top of their voice. Worn out plot and a million miles from studio Ghibli quality in animation and humanity. Too much violence for a young audience and too stupid for adults. An ordeal watching it.
Akira is a movie who's reputation defends it from honest assessment. While it is undoubtedly true that its influence on many movies that followed it has been substantial, its also got a plot that is practically unintelligible and the animation is a little bit crude by Studio Ghibli standards.
While worth watching to put it in context from a historical / cultural perspective. It is in truth a bit of a slog.
Also its claim to be the antecedent of the Matrix seems dubious to me, to my eyes it has taken far more from movies like Blade Runner and Aliens than it ever passed on to the Matrix.
Good to watch this again: an absolutely relentless train of action and carnage about society’s fear of youth, instability and the apocalypse - and it’s a cartoon! While I think the original mangas are the superior, more epic version of the story, the original creator did a great job at condensing and streamlining his immense, mind-bending vision into a feature-length film. The English dubbing isn’t bad either. Visually stunning for an animation as well, with slow-mo, realistic action and an overwhelming urban nightmare as a backdrop. Was 2019 as bad as this? Maybe…
