Synopsis:
'This has on energy that recalls the French New Wave gem, Paris Vu par..., as the largely neophyte film-makers are prepared to take chances in exploring themes like gender, immigration, alienation, isolation and communication' Radio Times Featuring diverse and emerging talent, London Unplugged offers a rich tableau of London lives under the radar. Tackling issues from asylum and predatory landlords to nightlife and dangerous pets, together these tales create a tapestry of London as it is experienced right now: as one of the most expensive, extraordinary, extreme cities in the world.
Shot during the centenary of women's suffrage, the emphasis is on female stories, showcasing adaptations by two classic female authors, written while they too were new London voices - Virginia Woolf's Kew Gardens and Katherine Mansfield's Pictures. The film is woven together by athlete Yourlance Bianca Richards, whose pursuit of connection and sanctuary takes the shape of a run across the city, echoing the themes of each short film as she passes through their respective neighbourhoods. Mixing drama and documentary to create a freshness and authenticity that critics compared to French New Wave gem, Paris Vu Par, London Unplugged is an acoustic homage to youthful big city living.

An oddity - London Unplugged review by SB

Spoiler Alert
20/05/2023

This disc (85 mins) consists of short films by new directors on the theme of living in London, hung together by an ongoing link about a woman running across London and the effect of that on her. Connection and disconnection is the sub-text.

It is inevitable in exercises of this sort that quality will be variable. One segment involving Juliet Stevenson and a lot of cats is thought-provoking with a twist, but some others are very jejeune. Imogen Stubbs has a one-minute cameo, which is a criminal waste.

This disc is best regarded as a diversion rather than something serious. It does provide further evidence that London is a hell-hole best avoided.
