Synopsis:
Based on the epic bestseller by Winifred Holtby, 'South Riding' is an enthralling, romantic and sweeping drama set in a small Yorkshire community in the 1930's. When idealistic new headmistress Sarah Burton (Dorothy Tutin) takes over Kiplington Girls High School, she finds herself falling for local landowner Robert Carne (Nigel Davenport). But times are tough. It's the height of the Depression. The poor live in squalid poverty, the middle-classes are struggling just to survive and even the landed gentry like Robert Carne are on the brink of financial ruin.
When the county council proposes a new road and a new town project, greed, corruption and sheer desperation divide the locals as never before - with tragic consequences...
