- On the eve of celebrating his retirement, from the London school he has taught for the last 30 years, Mark Thackeray (Sidney Poitier) announces that he will return to the classroom, at a Chicago high school run by a friend. Arriving at the troubled inner city school, Mark takes over a class of unruly, dangerous and disrespectful teenagers. But with years of experience behind him, he once again finds that he can be a positive influence on his students. However, apart from helping them to change their lives, Mark will also come to terms with the real reason he came to America...
