The Miracle Of Bern (2003)
Set in the summer of 1954, 'The Miracle Of Bern' is the story of 11 year old Matthias who lives in a German mining town with his mother, sister and brother. He is adopted as the bag carrier and lucky mascot for the local football team by top player Helmut Rahn (Sascha Gopel). Meanwhile, after years in captivity, Matthias' father Richard (Peter Lohmeyer) returns from a Soviet POW camp, only to cast a dark shadow over his once happy family.For Richard, football is pointless and so is the World Cup to be held in Bern, Switzerland. Matthias however, longs to be there with his idol who has been chosen to play for the German team, a group of part-times facing the might of the professional nations. Through his passion for the game and his fighting spirit, Matthias rekindles a love of life in his father's heart and may just 'help' in winning the World Cup!Winner of Best Picture and Best Actor at the the 2004 German Film Awards, this film is an intensely touching family drama shot against the exhilarating background of West Germany's miraculous World Cup victory of 1954.
